Noise, both inside and outside buildings, can be a highly emotive issue in today's built environment. Acoustics Plus has considerable experience in the field of building acoustics and is able to advise on sound insulation requirements and provide an accredited sound insulation testing service.
With neighbour noise an increasing occurrence, Approved Document E 2004 of the Building Regulations contains extensive sound insulation requirements for separating walls and floors in new build dwellings and flat conversions. Acoustics Plus can measure both airborne and impact sound insulation in full accordance with requirements set out in the Regulations and further can specify designs for good sound insulation.
Approved Document E gives guidance on how to achieve compliance with the requirements of the Building Regulations. The standards apply to the airborne and impact sound insulation of floors and stairs, and the airborne sound insulation of walls in new-build and where there is a material change of use in an existing building.
Typical situations where there is a material change of use (that will require the provision of sound insulation) are: where a building is used as a dwelling, hotel, boarding house, or contains a flat or room for residential purposes where previously it did not, or that the building contains a greater or lesser number of dwellings, or rooms used for residential purposes than it did previously.
Sound testing is required where compliance is required with paragraph E1 (Protection against sound from other parts of the building and adjoining buildings) of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2000. The person carrying out the work will need to ensure that appropriate sound insulation testing is carried out (by a test body with appropriate third party accreditation), and that a copy of the sound testing results is submitted to the local Building Control Body.
The requirement for pre-completion sound testing came into force on the 1st July 2003. If the construction is a new build and registered with Robust Details Ltd then pre-completion testing is not required. If the robust detail guidance has been followed but Robust Details registration has not occured then pre-completion testing will be required.
Acoustics Plus is accredited to undertake pre-completion testing under the Association of Noise Consultants Accreditation Scheme.
